Should the UK start digging up its landfill sites

Whether landfill mining is the ‘next big thing’ is a perennial topic on the fringes of recycling industry events.

The process hit the headlines in 2010 when British energy-from-waste (EfW) company Advanced Plasma Power (APP) teamed up with a landfill operator in Belgium to dig 17 million tonnes of waste for materials and energy recovery.

The landfill site, based in eastern Belgium, is due to become operational in 2014 and is claimed to be the world’s first commercial ‘enhanced’ landfill mining (LFM) project.

Many previous landfill mining sites - about 60 since the 1950s - have focused on land reclamation/remediation to increase void or mitigate environmental impacts. Where material or energy recovery has happened, it has often been a secondary concern rather than the primary motive for the work.
