Contract Summary:

The site comprised of five separate areas totalling circa 100 acres of land contaminated by previous uses as inter alia, a dump for gas works wastes, oil storage and distribution, paint production, coal storage, petroleum wharfage etc. 

The site as a whole was to be redeveloped for mixed residential, commercial and industrial uses with public open space and landscaping to suit.

The contract was let on the basis of a design and build with the contractor responsible for the completion and approval process for the remediation strategy and the design of the necessary remediation methods to achieve the approved site specific target values.

As a consequence of the legacy of previous uses and the overriding aim of maximising the asset value of all site won materials, the remediation process  employed a variety of stand alone and combined techniques:

  • Complex screening and sorting
  • Solidification (Stabilisation)
  • Soils washing
  • Bio remediation
  • Groundwater collection / extraction and treatment
  • LNAPL recovery

In total, approx 168,000 cu.m of material was excavated, processed and re-used, requiring the detailed management of materials handling, stockpile management and validations at each stage of the processes.

Following the site wide remediation HBR were instructed to design and install the primary storm water and foul water drainage systems.  This included the construction of stabilised pipe rafts over the alluvial clays and the remediation of 17,000 cm3 of drainage arisings.
